THE WING - New Town hall for the city of Blankenfelde-Mahlow, Blankenfelde-Mahlow (GER)
(Invited competition, 2010)
GFA: approx. 3.850 m2
The site is of a very urban character, thus the influences of the surrounding have great effect on the design. Especially the emissions from the Karl-Marx Strasse, Bahnstrasse and the noise of airplanes is to be eliminated. At the same time, a representative plaza for the people shall be generated, delivering a quality space, where people can stay, wait, talk and meet. This urban place should also give a representative surrounding to the building. The light and transparent elevation from the Karl Marx Strasse fits the building with a positive presence and unique adress.
The street as well as the urban space are guided by the building, with its curved shape. The roof shades the offices and collects rain water and solar energy. The creation of an attractive vis a vis to the carpark will be continued in the 2nd building stage, connecting at the northern part of the site. South of the building a green park is arranged, giving possibility for wedding photos, resting and a footwalk connection to the Brandenburger Platz.
The building presents itself with a transparent and welcoming architecture. All public offices are located at the groundfloor and thus easy to access.
The extraordinary low energy demand of the building (43% below applicable german law) easily fulfills the requirements of the EnEV 2012 and the EEWärmeG and results in an outstanding „Carbon Footprint“ of only 26 kg CO2/m²a, which is equal to a saving of 1/3 CO2, being about 45 tons per year in comparison to a modern reference building. Consequently this forward thinking design creates an enormous chance to receive a top rated building certificate.
