Holistic Architecture and Myths of Timber Construction

With Markus Gerharz (host) and Marc Böhnke (greeen! architects).

When Marc Böhnke co-founded greeen! architects in Düsseldorf in 2008 together with Mario Reale, they did so out of a clear conviction: they wanted to approach planning and construction more holistically and implement sustainability far more extensively and consistently than was common at the time.

This mission is also reflected in our company name, as the three “e’s” stand for ethical, ecological, and efficient. Today, our office has 25 employees, and our sustainable planning approaches have further evolved over time. Clients and municipalities are now also much more receptive to holistic designs than in the early years of the office.

In conversation with Markus Gerharz, Marc Böhnke champions timber as a building material, which he believes is unjustly burdened with restrictions and reservations—often due to lack of knowledge. The architect aims to change this and co-founded the COALITION FOR TIMBER CONSTRUCTION.

Find out in the latest episode of InterACT Insights, the podcast of the Rotonda Business Club, which myths in timber construction he wants to debunk and what he sees as the biggest hurdle to implementing a circular economy in construction.
